Green Anole Lizards : The green anole, Anolis carolinensis, is commonly referred to as a "chameleon" due to its ability to change color, but it is not a true chameleon. Each animal can change its color to blend with surroundings, from brown through a bright emerald green. The species is native to North America, where it is found mainly in the southeastern parts of the continent. Anoles are most abundant on the coastal plain from North Carolina to Florida, and west into central Texas. Anoles are, by their nature, curious creatures, and a healthy lizard usually has a good awareness of its surroundings. These photos were made near Austin, TX.

Ornate Box Turtle : The ornate box turtle, Terrapene ornata, is designated as the Kansas State Reptile, and is one of two box turtle species on the Great Plains that is terrestrial. Adult males have red eyes, while females’ eyes are yellowish brown. These are photos of a single female. The ornate box turtle is found throughout Kansas, and is perhaps most commonly observed attempting to cross roads. These photos were made in Syracuse, Kansas.
